artist statement
If I were to describe myself as an artist it would be like clouds gathering or water over stones. The silence of my mind would be freeing itself just for a moment in the excavation of my memory.
The act of making is a ‘Surrender’ a way to heal and find purpose from within.
To be mortal carries a responsibility to the earth we have been gifted by the universe. A gift to hold dominion over not to dominate.
The act of creation is a humble, a state of humility, peace and quiet. Through my observations it is important I express that which I feel rather than that I see.
At times it is difficult to express my state as the harsh realities of human behaviour become large gaps of compassion followed by awkward unease and a fleeting glimpse of a blemished reality on Earth.
My work thus asks for nothing but to be. Inviting the viewer to introspectively contemplate their own thoughts and emotions.
the process
My explorations run parallel with each other. I work in such a way that I develop a collection of works until the inspiration leads me to another version of truth. With each exhibition and body of work delving deeper into the human psyche it results in the use of multi layering and raw materials relating to the billions of years of change on earth historically, with every landform, volcano, rock face and ocean heralding a message from the infinite universe. Homeostasis is a dynamic process that can alter internal conditions to survive external challenges.
I am very drawn to process and how materials interact with each other, I love the imperfect, raw & stimulating excitement of using contradictory process whether it is to de-construct, weather or gathering foraged materials.
There is no real desire to control the outcome as I prefer to allow the layers to reveal the metaphoric, organic and static interaction in the final works.
I describe my work as textural and experimental as the outcome is never pre-written allowing the work to dictate the end result.
